Athletics and Coaching Experience

I grew up playing all different types of organized sport, but American football was the sport at which I excelled the most. I played American football at the university level (Thomas More), and this is where I developed a passion for physical development. When my playing career was over I became a strength and conditioning coach first at a performance centre called Athletic Strength and Power (working with all sorts of high-level professional and amateur athletes), and then at the university level (Bowling Green State University). As a university level strength coach, I oversaw the strength and conditioning programs for the Swimming, Gymnastics, Golf, and Track and Field teams. I also assisted with the strength programs for the Football and Basketball teams. During my years as a strength coach working with insanely gifted athletes I realized that there was more I could be doing to help them and to help others. This was when I turned my focus from physical health to mental health with the ultimate goal of merging the two.

Philosophy of Life/Exercise

If you don’t enjoy what you are doing, then you should ask yourself why you’re doing it. My goal is to enjoy everything I do to the fullest and to help others find sources of fun and enjoyment through exercise. Exercise has the great potential to improve both the physical and psychological well-being of a person, but exercise can have very different meanings for everyone. For me, exercise is an opportunity to challenge myself. Each time I am challenged I hope to discover something new about my “self” that I previously did not know. My teaching/coaching philosophy is to help exercisers learn the skills and use the tools required to allow them to push themselves to challenge themselves and advance along the path of self-discovery.
